PostSubject: When inspiration wanes...   When inspiration wanes... EmptyFri Feb 18, 2011 8:32 pm

I was practicing a while ago (yung Bach's A minor concerto) and a thought came into my mind: why go through this that you can do something else worthwhile?

I think I am suffering from "fatigue" from playing the violin too much. The time I allocate to my violin playing is rather not very profound but parang it "rules" over my life na. Do you think it's healthy or I just need a big break like doing other activities? i used to ride the bike ever morning but every since I picked up the violin again I had to stop riding the bike because I fear I might end up having broken bones (alam niyo naman ang mga lansangan natin at ang mga driver).

Anung mga strtegies nyo kapag inspiration is starting to die out?

I can relate, pero for different reasons. Mostly frustration because I wasn't progressing as I wanted to.

I have other diversions. Kung medyo naiinis na ako dahil hindi ko makuha ang gusto out of my practice, I draw, I watch DVDs until recently, ngayon mostly Crime and Investigation channel sa cable, I read books, and hand-write letters to my friends. Kung minsan naman walking trip ako sa Quiapo to enjoy the noise and the color. O kung may available sa mga friends ko, inaaya ko silang lumabas. Basically I put some space between me and my violin kung medyo oppressive na.

Pero as any "lover", after a given time, I find na hinahanap-hanap ko ang violin, at binabalikan ko siya. I guess it just happens to most everyone. :) Breathe a little.

I agree with this.....

back to topic, same here, minsan naiisip ko na dapat ung time na inaallocate ko sa pagtugtog ay nagagamit ko n lng sa pagrereview..... pero katulad nga ng sabi ni ate rizz, violin is like someone who you love most, hinahanap-hanap.... When inspiration wanes... 112191 ndi kumpleto araw kpag ndi nakakatugtog.....

Siguro...I really need a time out. The last few days was a bit stressful "setting" up my violin. Yung soundpost kasi nag collapse after changing the fittings. So far, na force ko yung self ko to do the set up with proper precaution. Stressful talaga.

Pag na down yung mood ko to play the violin, I always go back sa quote from the THE RED VIOLIN: "You must have a strong heart to play the violin."

IMO Hinde puwede na panay violin ka lang, Sometimes kailangan mag break out ka sa music world, itago mo muna ung violin at lahat ng music paraphernalia, at mag refresh at libangin mo ang sarili sa ibang bagay... Mindless diversion. kung bachelor ka pa, then hang out with the boys Hoooyah boooyay! kahit for a week then balik ka ulit sa pag violin, narecharge ka na noon. Ako nga eh, pag ganun medyo tinatamad pa sa umpisa, pero pagkatapos ko pasadahan ang book 1 ng suzuki. back in shape na ulit para practisin ung mga piyesa na gusto ko.

Sa level siguro ng professional iyan, hinde ka puwedeng tamarin at dapat palagi ka up in shape for performing... the show must go on!

Ganyan din ang situasyon ko bilang artist, kahit wala ako sa mood, bastos ung costumer, ayaw ko ung pinapagawa, at kahit nasira ung laptop ko[sa labas ako gagawa]... the show must go on, otherwise, starving artist na ako ngayon.

I have also this kind of work ethic...sometimes it's good because it pushes me to do the very best I can in my work...but it can be harmful when done in huge proportions...

True, kaya nga may vacations ang mga pro. :D hinde na normal pag nag work ka "Full Throttle 24/7 365" workaholic ka na noon. Kung Hobby lang ang violin sa iyo, it should only bring fun & leisure and not Stress & Burdensome chores.

IMHO lang: When one decides to take up the violin, I think a decision on 2 answers which will dictate next steps:

1. What level of commitment is one prepared to give?
2. IS one or WILL one be prepared to give a consistent level of commitment?

If recreation lang, then minimal time will be devoted for minimal gain. There will be time for everything else, and how "good" one gets will range from "so-so" to "okay lang" which is fine if that's all one expects of oneself.

Now if one decides they WANT to be good, then acceptance of the violin ruling the majority of one's remaining time must happen because that is what it will take to be GOOD -- the range of which can be subjective, so for purposes of discussion lagay nalang natin sa level 1 (perfect sa intonation and measures ng kahit anong piece assigned or tackled, pati sight-reading), 2 (kasing-galing na level ni Liza), and 3 (skills can merit an audition with a professional orchestra) ang range definition for what constitutes GOOD -- and depending on WHAT level of GOOD one aims to be, then that would dictate how much of one's available time will be devoted to the violin. For folks like us, that will also mean crucially deciding WHAT other things will remain to share the little time we have left. So basically, a "paring down of fluff" will have to be done. Photography. Kendo. Movie-Marathons. Etc. Lahat yan "fluff" na yan dedesisyunan ng "stay" or "go". Ang matitirang constant is work + school and/or higher education classes (i.e.: MBA, language certification courses, etc).

My thinking kasi is, if malinaw sa isang tao ang balak nyang patunguhan, the proverbial "fire in your belly" should be all the inspiration one needs to keep the fire lit.

But, since "tao lang" and all, to answer your question, these are what I do to maintan the balance:

1. After an hour of practice that has me frustrated, I watch an episode (or two) of La Corda d'Oro or whatever anime series am following at the moment. Depende nalang sa mood. HeHe!
2. In general naman, I play a few notes of my "panagarap pieces" pang-tanggal umay lang. I call it the "atchara intermission".
3. I go to Little Tokyo to eat and read. Makipag-kwentuhan kay Ojii-sama para hindi mabulok yun nihonggo.

Basically, activities that will keep my upper limbs safe. Ang worst na pwede mangyari ay paper cut!

Of course if magkaroon ng out of town or country due to work or gimmick (na more than 24 hours) with family or friends, bitbit ang violin. Paalam and hingi baon lessons from Sensei (if more than 1 week mawawala). Family and Friends know I will need 30mins-1hour a day to practice.

And they are wise enough to know not to make kontra. (^^,)v

@ Yuuko-san, I'll take hole of your words of wisdom.

I had somewhat coaxed myself not to practice too much: the main point is enjoying the activity itself. May konting pressure ngayon because mag peperform ako sa birthday party ng aking lolo...titirahin ko yung Bach's Gavotte from Suzuki Book 4 or 5 yata.

Wow. Pagbutihan. :) What I always keep in mind ay yung sinabi ni RAd nung ako yung nape-pressure sa practice "You should enjoy your performance" After all nga naman, dapat ipadama sa audience yung piece, eh kung kinakabahan ka at pressured, ano na lang ang makukuha ng audience di ba?

Sana mai record performance mo tapos iparinig mo sa amin :D

Nakaka-inspire yung sinabi ni Yuuko-san. ^_^
Medyo nagbabadya yung inspiration ko kasi pagka naiisip ko yung work ko, I tend to procrastinate sa practice. Kaya ako I look for violin tutorials or mga words of wisdom sa net to remind me that I need to practice esp dahil beginner pa lang ako.
